How to use the Content Depth Analyzer

Measure whether the page has enough text, enough complete thoughts, and how thoroughly those thoughts cover the search phrase.

  1. Use Content Depth as evidence of useful expertise: it separates scored words, complete thoughts, and search-connected sentence breadth.

Break content depth into three understandable parts

Content Depth evaluates word volume, qualifying sentence count, and the percentage of qualifying sentences connected to the search phrase. These components are displayed separately because a single total cannot explain what a page lacks. Word volume contributes forty percent, qualifying sentence count contributes thirty percent, and the connected-sentence percentage contributes the remaining thirty percent. Begin with the weakest component rather than assuming that a longer page is automatically the answer.

The live calculation panel shows each component score, multiplies it by its available points, and adds those three contributions into the final score. Each component row also places the current page on a labeled scale. The marker positions show exactly where useful input milestones land on the component curve, while the current-position label pairs the measured count with its score out of 100.

A qualifying sentence contains at least five words. This prevents abbreviations, isolated interface labels, and short punctuation fragments from inflating the count. A connected sentence must also contain a normalized search-phrase word. Green passages show those qualifying sentences in the complete stored content. The visualization therefore lets you inspect the actual language behind the percentage rather than trusting a mysterious passage total.

Understand why large deletions can cause small changes

Word and qualifying-sentence components use diminishing returns. Early useful material raises the score more than additional material on an already extensive page. About 800 words earns roughly sixty-three percent of the word component, while approximately 3,684 reaches ninety-nine percent. The qualifying sentence count behaves similarly: about 24 qualifying sentences earns sixty-three percent, and roughly 111 reaches ninety-nine percent. These curves prevent sheer length from dominating.

If a page begins with thousands of words and many sentences, removing a large block can leave both components near their ceilings. The overall percentage may then move only slightly. Use the raw before-and-after counts shown after measurement to confirm what changed. A small score movement does not mean the editor ignored the deletion; it means the remaining document still supplies enough volume under the factor’s bounded formula.

Inspect the connected share of the page

The connected-sentence component divides qualifying sentences containing at least one search-phrase word by every qualifying sentence in the stored visible content. If 30 of 100 qualifying sentences connect, the component score is 30/100 and contributes 9 of its 30 available points. Repeating a word inside one sentence does not create another qualifying sentence.

Read every green passage for quality and compare it with the unmarked sentences. Some passages may come from navigation, forms, embedded widgets, or repeated template content rather than the main answer. If the percentage is high for the wrong reasons, improve the central content rather than adding more mentions. If it is low, add genuinely missing answers that naturally use the search language or remove unrelated boilerplate.

Decide whether the page needs detail or restraint

A low word component can indicate that the page does not provide enough information for its purpose, but it can also describe a page that should remain concise. Consider page type and intent. A detailed guide may need definitions, steps, evidence, exceptions, and examples. A contact page or narrow conversion page may not. Use the factor as a diagnostic signal and apply editorial judgment before expanding anything.

When depth is already high, focus on organization, accuracy, and removal of repetition. Diminishing returns intentionally allow editors to cut bloated material without a severe penalty. Improve headings, combine duplicated sections, move essential answers earlier, and delete template noise where the publishing system permits it. A shorter, clearer document can be the correct outcome even when its displayed depth percentage decreases modestly.

Run a before-and-after depth experiment

Open the visible-content preview and make one deliberate change. Click Measure This Change to recalculate the draft locally. Review the edited Content Depth Score, then read the summary showing word count, qualifying sentence count, and connected-versus-total sentence ratio before and after. Those raw transitions explain exactly which component responded. No crawl or queue refresh is required for this preview calculation.

Test deletions as well as additions. Removing boilerplate should reduce raw counts and can improve the connected share, while adding an unrelated sentence increases the denominator. Adding a well-developed missing answer can increase both the connected count and the percentage when it naturally contains search language. Publish only after reading the complete revision for flow and factual accuracy. When the live URL is processed again, compare its stored measurements with the approved draft.

Use depth measurements during editorial cleanup

Depth is particularly useful when teams are afraid to remove outdated content because a page currently ranks. Capture the three component counts, delete or consolidate material in the preview, and measure the result. If word and sentence components remain near their ceilings and essential green passages survive, the factor shows that substantial cleanup is possible without losing much measured depth. This does not guarantee rankings, but it replaces a vague fear of shortening with transparent evidence about this specific signal.

Look for duplication, stale promotions, repeated calls to action, obsolete requirements, and embedded interface text that overwhelms the main explanation. Preserve unique facts, examples, limitations, and decision support. When adding depth, prefer material that reduces uncertainty: definitions for unfamiliar terms, steps in a process, comparisons between options, eligibility details, credible evidence, and answers to follow-up questions. These additions create complete thoughts and topic breadth because they serve the reader, not because they inflate a counter.

Evaluate depth alongside information hierarchy. A page can contain many qualifying sentences yet bury its primary answer. Move decisive information earlier, break dense sections under descriptive headings, and ensure the conclusion or next step is easy to locate. Then measure again to confirm the factor remains healthy. Keep a short change log showing raw counts and the reason for every major deletion or addition. That record helps future editors distinguish intentional simplification from accidental content loss and makes depth optimization a maintainable quality practice.
